It´s an interview done in 2007 which was published in City Trash #28. And luck has it that they will do a show in Meppel on Thursday the 19th of August! Summer is Fun!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 83px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjSUgKlOuyRF0pRves83iE3Tp53m_Sk2V1517d8tvPex6qS8GkkumbLejoSMyMVpxJxxV8ydxhZjSYG7QEvyNiYkAIOJXzTNKLg2u62UL10vQxlt5uNEbxrVy5nL1e6yGNe7zObBWU1OSl/s320/logo+krontjong.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499033881083702258" />
# Last year saw some kind of ressurection of the Krontjong Devils doing some great shows. Who are nowadays in the line-up?
The Krontjong Devils' line-up since 1998 is Kees on guitar, organ and vocals, Hendrik-Jan on guitar, Gerhard on bassguitar and vocals and Nico on drums and vocals.
# If I´m correct that´s 3 original members. Only Jan Phenomenema is missing. Any idea what he´s doing these days?
Yes, we're still with three original members, none of us plays his original instrument though. As you might know, Kees was the drummer on our first EP "Moovin with the Krontjong Devils", our first shows we played with Jan and Gerhard on guitar, Hendrik Jan on bassguitar and Kees on drums. And it's not only Jan missing, also Jan Pier, our drummer when we played with 3 guitars and who now plays with Meindert Talma & the Negroes is no longer with us. Jan totally retired from music.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 108px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw6S3BLG23KKnUwhwc9PYEHnLJlyXhTu5Z6IpZ2vNb8YddkhEYpO_QgxmTQodhgTQH0jUkxge_Zbma3m5E1pvNB1LdUAdKcShyphenhyphenSZCTODJTyNJU4CHQItDJ434XhskuGuleUl4q9r2Y61MR/s320/groep5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499034053063169170" />
# You started out I believe in 1990. How did you all meet and decided it´s time for a surf combo?
After we (Jan, Kees & Gerhard) quit with our noise-rock band, SPARTA, we decided it was time for a new band and at first we tried to continue the noise-rock thing but we got fed up with that real quick. We were already listening to and enjoying 50-ties and 60-ties rock and roll and finding out about surfmusic. Then in 1990 we saw the Five Fantastic Firebirds play their final show in the Simplon Bovenbar, they totally inspired us to play instrumental music. At first we didn't play that much surf though, but mostly Link Wray and "Strummin Mental" covers.
# Do you remember which songs you covered?
Of course we did Link Wray songs like Rumble and Commanche and a song called Yukkum Yukkum from Punk Carson & The Chucklers from the Concussion!!! compilation on Mr. Manicotti Records. Another fave of the Devils, King Uszniewicz & the Usniewicztones also played that song.
# Do you have any idea why there was a sudden interest in 60s music and the popularity of Link Wray in Groningen in the early 90s, which resulted in the Rumble Grunn fest at the end of ´92?
To be honest, I have no idea why all this stuff was so popular at the time but I loved it anyway. There were a lot of cool bands around in Groningen and a lot of cool records came out at the time that inspired a lot of people. The Krontjong Devils is one of the few bands of the Rumble bill that is still around. And, mind you, all this was before Pulp Fiction, the movie that made surfmusic "popular".
# Did any of you play in other bands at that time, because it seemed a lot of people were involved in more than one band?
Kees, Hendrik Jan, Jan Pier and me (Gerhard) were playing at that time with the giants of dutch language music, Combo Knus & Gezellig and its instrumental (James Last and Gebroeders Brouwer style) spinoff band Troskompas.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 220px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL3psUWtha0Bi8JVV_MhlpFUz1Q2C1hfQqhRtEiMMlzyS6ChGxada5ksnWv-KpHbwu59HIZyB6Ov8nkjPRxBPLH0FtwXJ0JgfOdDE-mZo29L0vO6wV5yL63VniAr3zOTHuTavHXVIZY2xr/s320/moov.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499034589893624610" />
# In 1994 the debut Moovin´ with the Krontjong Devils was released on Kogar Records. It has a great sound. Who recorded it and were?
This Ep and most of our other records were recorded at Walter Tremp's Studios in Beetgum by Walter Tremp and Marthy Coumans (of Four One & Onlys' fame)
# Is this the Marty known for doing all those sixties compilations?
Yes
# You mentioned that initially you played more rockin´ instros, but the 45 is definetely surf with a lot of reverb, but when did you decide to do vocal stuff, like `Surfer Joe´ and `That´s cool, that´s trash´?
You know, a lot times you see a band playing only instrumentals it tends to get boring, so some vocals add a little variation and we like those songs and, although we are no Paverottis, we like to sing too!
# The second 7´´ was on Oetstar Rekkers. Who were the people behind the label? Was it part of the Hobbyrock Foundation?
The people of Oetstar Rekkers were the same people behind the Hobbyrock Foundation and behind the Magazine for the allround thinker, de Hobbyrocker.
# For the people who are not familiar with the Hobbyrock Foundation could you tell in short what it´s all about?
The Hobbyrocks Foundation was founded when the Giants Of Dutch Language Music, Combo Knus & Gezellig started to make some money and instead of putting all that money in our pockets, we decided to do something fun with it, like the Hobbyrocker magazine, The Oetstar Rekkers label, making super 8 movies.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 177px; height: 236px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRp3a8c6ZbjX7Vv-xjNm1PSHVqtJCz56IR0z-ofPsbNvhniBAorWi2fkQUmGjBXW1rYv1tPNgMAqmsh4eJscSVochr1VVXF5OiFRT3CRhzBD3rz57e_U7rDUEVAq4FI-Kht8KYFfYPVJcT/s320/ideeCT.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499035071284087106" /># After two singles on local labels, the third was released by Hillsdale. You´re one of the few if not only band from Groningen to be released on an American label. How did you get in contact with them?
We're definitely not the only band from Groningen on an American label, how can you forget the Oetstar recording artists De Stipjes? But we are the only band from Groningen on the Hillsdale label. We got in touch with the Hillsdale CEO when the Phantom Surfers played at Vera. After the show I gave Johnny Bartlett our first EP and I think he liked it because the next time I met him he told me: "If you ever record something send it to Hillsdale". So we made some new recordings and Voilá!# Yes how could I forget De Stipjes. Did you also do some shows in the US? Some people actually think we did, because of the story on our On Tour LP but, I hate to tell this, this story was totally made up. None of it is true.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuj4S0oq02m-MWdx1c3UqjbZQToc0-lnAAbkWfQ4oWObbqoUuQv4ifaE8iX1cUFnFnqD9-uUb5kWd8ReNMV4vhf_6PA4qQy7107wzv70vq6v6Q9q0lrVvHpW3gs8KR0HXbEV4dGWNwK700/s320/trashshoot2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499035704226413938" /># Where did you mostly play?
We played all over the Netherlands and some shows in Germany.
# What were the most memorable shows? I think you played with Dick Dale, how was that experience?
Playing with Dick Dale was fun, we got a chance to interview and, like you probably know, you don't have ask him questions, when he starts talking about all the things he invented, he never stops. The best thing he said was: "he who speaks doesn't know, he who knows doesn't speak", I think he referred to himself so it totally didn't make sense. Another memorable show was our show in Berlin. We played in a cellar, a little bigger than the Vera cellar, and the place was totally packed with wild cheering germans. We played there with The No-Counts from Berlin, who by the way have one of the best "Back From The Grave"-style singles out!
# After a split single with the Royal Pendletons on Knobbler Records you released your first full CD on the Dutch label Rarity Records. Unfortunetaly I don´t know the record, in fact I didn´t know about the release until a couple of years ago. What can you tell me about it, I got the impression the Krontjong Devils weren´t too pleased with the result?
We got an offer from Rarity to release a CD and they would pay for the recordings and everything else but, we had to go to their studio and we had to record only instrumentals. This could have worked ok but they also wanted to record everything as clean as possible and no "special effect"and stuff. And on top of that they wanted as many songs possible on the cd. That's a strange thing about some people, they think they need to use all the available space on cd. So we ended with a cd with too many songs sounding too clean. I think we could have made some fine EP's with these recordings. Anyway, this cd is not the record we're the most proud of.
# Two years later, 1998, saw the release of the LP `On Tour!!!´ on Telstar. Was it just as easy to arrange as the EP on Hillsdale?
It was even easier than the Hillsdale EP, this time we could choose between labels. We got an offer from Telstar, they asked for some recordings and right after that Dionysus offered to release the LP but by then we already were going with Telstar.
# I´m not sure but I believe the record also features for the first time two songs written by the Krontjong Devils themselves. Were you sick of playing only covers or was it a moment of pure inspiration?
Indeed, this was a moment of pure inspiration. We never got sick of playing only covers, we hardly played our own songs live for reasons unknown. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 220px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Jpks6iDu2hWHYb__6x7MXuL3ybd6FNV7q5DsT-YQ_DwGb_2ZAUvNKtnpXWkE0rDrf1SVF-zNfOYgVEGDqkpO7vjARuNPCR_eZShAIlaODePz_7f8eR5fnPGpsyH-_yD1JMaR25iRJTuA/s320/tour.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499042643293585698" />
# By the way who comes with the ideas for the sleeve, because this one is great again?
We maybe not very creative in songwriting department but for the pictures on our sleeves we are hard to top. The ideas do not come from one of the individuals, it's a group process!
# The next release, once again in killer picture sleeve in Oriental setting, was the Sizzling Sampan EP on Double Crown. This has 3 originals, a courageous move. Who writes the songs?
I don't know if you have to call this courageous, I think it was accidentally but it was cool anyway to release an EP with 3 originals, Kees and me wrote those songs.
# Is there more selfwritten material on the shelve awaiting release?
Yes, in the batch of songs hat are waiting for a release, there is some more selfwritten material. So, labelbosses...
# The only cover is `Land beyond the moon´ on the Sizling Sampan EP and the Krontjong Devils do a great job, but who originally recorded it, because I only know the Untamed Youth version?
Thanks for the compliment! "Land Beyond The Moon" is originally by The Motions (USA) and can be found on the Hipsville compilation.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCtLTpFrs1DOwyGxFkw_KJztpBencLU2VPplMfWhpzIogMOvRc2jPeFFTv6_Q5Mhaj_OR3UOO1y17YF1zcglk_GWgJW1RIQ14F51enRhhoKvAOSLWnJ6LbLlepkh0CROPD-diBCU7iymg-/s320/promotional.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499037481690442210" /> # After the full length `On Tour!!´ you mostly appeared on compilation CDs, except for the just mentioned EP on Double Crown. Why haven´t there been more regular releases from the Krontjong Devils?
Why there haven't been more Krontjong Devils releases is a good question. There has been some interest from some labels but unfortunately things never worked the way the shoud have. Another reason might be our lack of efforts to get something done properly. Like I said before, we still have recordings on the shelve which hopefully will be released in the not distant future. Personally I think there some of the best material we recorded among it.
# By the way do you have any idea why a lot of surf is being released on CD, and those endless compilations with 24 songs or more, what´s your opinion on this?
Hey, CD's suck and memory sticks even more!!! The seven inch EP or single is the best medium to release instrumental surfmusic in our opinion. 10 inches or LP's are OK too. But, you are totally right those 24 song or more CD-compilation sound like they never end. Especially the instrumental only compilations. That's, like I said before, one of the reasons the Krontjong Devils like to mix some vocal songs in our set.
# The compilation that made perfect sense for the Krontjong Devils to appear on was the Trashmen tribute. Are they what you might call `heroes´ for the Krontjong Devils, since they also mixed great vocal tracks with instrumental surf songs?
Absolutely, The Trashmen is / were one of the best surfband out there. Also for the fact they were from Mineapolis where there's no surf at all!
# Any other other bands you wouldn´t mind paying tribute to?
A band we definitely would pay tribute to is King Uszniewicz & the Usniewicztones. Other favorites of ours that we wouldn't mind paying tribute to are the Bobby Fuller IV, The Astronauts, The Untamed Youth to name but a few.
# What´s up next for the Krontjong Devils, a new release or another concert in Germany?
Our goals for the future are: Finally play a show in Meppel!!! And releasing another record!!!

A year later they did release a new record, and you be sure to pick it up:
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 312px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY9gcfhnAusAZKc-vHaL2X0xFjIhcGxoBCAANqqyAFQGlRlAkSRMfE6QmBU81_ks7yo78zPB68myzZzD2p4dLFLspXuQZ6mgOGtiRX16S1VI2hhUofsxZTzx1brvbQqyxJ89J-JcMvjR7u/s320/krontjong+devils.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499038079640166434" />

AND IN 2 WEEKS THEY WILL ACCOMPLISH THEIR OTHER GOAL: FINALLY DOING A SHOW IN MEPPEL!!
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-4378195845155493582010-08-04T11:52:00.005+02:002010-08-06T10:29:53.289+02:00HET COMBO KOEDIJK Donderjagen op Donderdag Meppeldag<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 312px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaLCHd2o-Wq3p9QL2vNt4i1df7wPg7ypycLIKgcRK7XQaM9rMr2s9srsuNzlgDB-yf4Tv3GbwAEHiJu2wTTQ6Cy2yLAOC1b_Ls2VyPF6FcgXVWmpuk7un7cIXdHE5YRAm6hNxaen0ka73P/s320/POSTER+DMD.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501489327287130658" />
You might have read the following in the latest City Trash and gotten very excited:

HET COMBO & KURIOSA JOIN FORCES
After working together on the garden and preparing the big move of Kuriosa boss to Spain, Kuriosa Records and Het Combo Koedijk are happy to anounce their next project. Last year saw the release of a 10" on Kuriosa Records and a 7" on Vinyl Junkie Rekkids and both had some great songs intentionally recorded very crude and raw to capture their spirit, a spirit that was very visible during their 2 short trips to Spain where they convinced the crowd with their energetic, hectic and fast shows. Their debut full length released by Dirty Water Records seems in comparison very mature, with a great sound arranged by bassplayer Peter Kroes and nicely balanced. And in that sense it is a great leap forward.
In the short time they managed to come up with some great new material. The record starts off with the perfect example, “Searchin”, a great song in 60´s vain with some nice hooks, great drum rolls, an hectic organ and the desperate vocals of the singer on duty. Actually the organ is a nice touch on several songs like the heartfelt “Miss you”, an amazing little song. And let´s not forget the melodic and thus more poppy “Doreen”, no, once again there´s plenty to enjoy.
If you buy it after one of their shows though you are in for a surprise because on first appearance it runs a bit long because there is much more room for actual songs instead of the fury found in their concerts, for instance the great balladry of "The Hurtin´ Kind" and "Not the Same”, 2 great songs written by singer Henri Sulmann and songs that sometimes unjustly might be skipped during one of their performances to keep up the pace. Fortunately to compensate there are of course the savage "I need help!" or the Outsideresque "I wanna tell her" and crowd pleaser "Stop Pushin´ Me", sort of a cover from De Miracle Men. And talking about covers, their essential version of De Avengers´"Be a Keefman" is here and the wild instro "Sickels and Hammers" originally from De Minutemen, so there´s no room for complaining.
It´s a great album with a touch of timelessness, containing songs with their roots in soul, beat and rock´n´roll, from Otis to Reigning Sound and from The Outsiders to the Minutemen, showing Henri skills as singer and songwriter, fronting the killer backbeat delivered by the dynamite duo Dennis de Lange & Peter Kroes. Completed with some great hilarious liner notes by Dandy Dave and housed in a classic sleeve makes this a perfect debut.

To get a taste watch their excellent first official video "I Need Help!. Filmed on 4/5 June 2010 for Dirty Water Films on a hunebedden (megalithic tomb) near Klazienaveen by Spanish filmmaker Rafael Perez
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-29837900346884149172010-07-25T10:38:00.010+02:002010-08-06T10:31:47.143+02:00Summer Means Fun - Part 2: The MobsmenContinueing the old interviews idea and since the summer is still far from over and everybody should be at the beach. Here´s an interview done with The Mobsmen for City Trash #31 in 2008. A year later they would surprise us with one of the best surf records in years "Scelerats Syndicate" on the Double Crown label.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 270px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUdiXFLtxMX1010VuJG8jh9TGEeB-9fYCNmaGvllOXdwaxBpZSUkJsxGvWEbMDvOYz6JeaXIEGzpAad-kGUZE7iD3tAyTJAJ-_kOLP6iYH4FX_fzQLwo4FNn0HO5JQnlWK2rmY634WXdKO/s320/mobsmen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497758574011027442" />INTERVIEW WITH SIMEN MOBSMEN:
Because The Sealions are an amazing combo and the Indikation were a great group releasing a terrific album and a bunch of excellent 45s, I was glad to hear the recordings of a new band called The Mobsmen featuring two people of the aforementioned bands. A thrilling surfcombo was the result of their joint efforts, and after witnessing them live last year in Oslo I knew it was time to ask Simen some simple questions.

Who are in the Mobsmen?
Peter rhythm guitar, Thomas drums, Bjarte bass, me lead guitar
When did you start?
Maybe 2005, talking with Thomas about starting a band. I was living in the same flat as Bjarte and he´s interested in sixties so he wanted to join, Peter started last fall.
What made you decide to begin a surf combo?
Thomas played in the Indikation and he wanted another type of sixties band and I didn´t have a band at the time.
Did you play in other bands than the Sealions?
No in Norway just some projects.
What kind of projects?
More like ad-hoc bands for special occasions, like wedding bands for weddings, horror bands for Halloween and that kind of stuff.
Do any of the others play in other bands?
Yes, Bjarte plays in Peter Berry and the Shake Set, and Thomas is working on this 66 fuzz garage act that probably will materialise soon.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkrtRldSuat2SjJBgOjqlQqTGIfR2y6VJthX0cNwKiN34NZy-gJuigDMAIVc9-r9xTq6sH9lJIiBbX40DjEf0CEc3b7O8GOB3Tbf-5usHPx3ySXLoLfRq3No8tqjVRZzA5dy5VW8S3wox1/s320/mobsmen3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497759044095589522" />Do you write most of your own songs?
The songs with vocals are mostly original. The instrumentals are a lot of covers, but probably about half are originals. I think we actually play more the originals than the covers now, but it’s taken a while before we reached there.
What covers are on the setlist?
Let me see, nowadays we do Similau (Surfaris), Mar Gaya (Fender IV), Contact (Pyramids), a surf-version of Flamenco (Los Brincos), plus obvious standards like Misirlou, Hava Nagila and Squad Car to get the kids going. We’ve done several others like Burnin Rubber (Gene Moles) and Storm Surf (Surfaris), but they’ve had to make place for originals, so we don’t play them so much any more.
Of the vocals we do You better tell me now which is actually the b-side of Mar Gaya, plus Kanamam by turkish beat band Mavi Isiklar where we try sing in turkish.
Why did you add vocals to the surfband?
It´s a little to try to attract a bigger audience, cause for some reason many people lose concentration when they have to listen to only instrumentals for more than half an hour, but the main reason is because we like to play those songs.
Who writes most of songs?
I’ve written most of our songs with the exception of one instrumental that Thomas wrote.
Did you play a lot?
17 gigs with the 18th to be played late in july.
All in Oslo?
All yes, we had an offer to play in Fredrikstad, but we hesitated for too long so now their schedule is full all year long .
What´s a good place to play in Oslo? Any wild stories?
I think the best stage is at a place called Gamla, but I guess our favorite place is where we rehearse, cause then we don’t have to load the equipment after the show.
Wild stories? I don’t think so. I wish there would’ve been, but it’s mostly tales about getting too drunk after the show. I think the most crazy thing that’s happened was when a string on my guitar fell so out of tune that it dropped an entire octave to fall back IN tune again. That was spooky!
How about outside of Norway?
We´re might go to Sweden to play with the Barbwires. We are not used to touring because then we have to organize more. We’d love to play in Holland though, because of the familiar atmosphere here. Always good to be back “home”.
The songs now are recorded in your rehearsal room, any plans for some real recording?
We ´re going to record in August, in Oslo. A guy has there a studio suited for sixties records
Do you know who is going to release it?
No that´s still open
The sound is very good eventhough it was not properly recorded, especially the vocals are amzing. Was this common amongst the early surfbands?
Most bands did it, but most vocals are standard frat rock or rock tunes or covers, like Surfer Joe or some simple version of Beach Boys songs but you had some bands that where good at it like the Chantays.
You songs are not like the Beach Boys?
No, the genre is more typical generic mid sixties beat sound a la ´64. Not like a specific thing like the Mersey-sound or the Minneapolis-sound, or the Seattle-sound or the South Bay-sound or anything like that. Just songs, you know. Music with words to it.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIaTEW-y0FIl5rvcvWFL2TLvFs6kB9CVUKjcnhE4NxwJb6DfxLTRy_arwvvY9BAVl3JnIMPMQsHHp2BSI4hHhG9T-D3Achm5ZHX0uoyw6R9U_Hqcw0FR_LP9DRevvr7IlIT0cSYFnW97nw/s320/mobsmen2A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5497759916310138562" />What´s with the masks when you perform? ZZ & the Maskers perhaps an inspiration for the Mobsmen?
The idea about the masks came the night before we were going to perform at a birthday party, and we wanted something a little extra that would give us a trademark look. I had been thinking about it a while beofer also, like an all black attire with a color accessoire, like a badge, or a belt or something. On top of that we found out that crook masks on top of that would give something that would be easily recognized. So we did. That red scarves we had a little problems to find, so we ended up in an Indian textile store where they had some fake red silk that suited our idea very well.
Since the Mobsmen seem to combine the best of surf and beat, what are you favorite 5 beat songs and 5 surf songs?
Whoa, that’s tough. When you say beat, I guess a lot of people probably think of Mersey beat, Beatles-style, but beat I guess, is just genreless songs with a distinct 60s sound. You know, a little mix of everything: rock, doo wop, country, vaudeville, pop, folk etc melted together into a Fender or Vox-amp with a twist beat plus some freaked out vision of world dominance. So for me the question would be more: what are your favourite songs. At the moment I’ve been listening a lot to Bobby Fuller Four, so I’d lump Let her dance into that list. I’m also a big fan of Everly Brothers version of Pretty Flamingo at the moment. Johnny remember me with John Leyton is also wicked. You better tell me now(Fender IV) should be in there too, as should N'écoute pas les idoles with France Gall.
The surf-list is a little easier to make: El Gato (Chandelles), Mar Gaya (Fender IV), Failsafe (New Dimensions), Surf Party (Astronauts) plus lately I’ve fallen completely in love with the titlesong on the latest Tarantino movie Death Proof The Last Race (Jack Nitzsche).
Any current act you enjoy and are close to the Mobsmen sound?
I must admit that I don’t really listen a lot to current bands currently outside of concerts, but I do see some similarities in the approach the Krontjong Devils and we have.
Well can´t wait to hear the recordings of the Mobsmen on a proper record. Any final comments?
If you buy us a beer before the concert the chance is much greater that you won’t lose your wallet during the show! We prefer to have friends, but have a pragmatic approach to enemies.

www.myspace.com/themobsmen
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-5320310578891552102010-06-10T11:13:00.004+02:002010-07-27T20:34:43.143+02:00De Keefmen Tour & LP!!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjisi-ExpBNg-3YEEcgashh2jKmd93qx_cslWmix8flHeApqQ3xHvFqBdZL-2dt4_pLBx4oIkzjmab44q8bUvB95PJTLGydhN5_hwqoqYDQQLS2U7mU69nbKgUocYccD1FndZ0hk0LsNQJ0/s320/Keefmen+spanish+tour.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478853492292903810" />
After a little bit than over a year the boys are back in Spain for another tour. Not a lot has happened when you come to think about it. In between they only played actually one show and that being in the afternoon at Primitive Festival almost a year ago. Probably now they are rehearsing their long waited return to the stage. I´m sure Peter is practising his Spanish ("Gracias"), Henri his preaching during "Don´t look back" and getting of a stage mid song and who knows what Dennis has in mind. Be sure to catch them while you can..
Another thing they did was record some new songs just before Dennis left for NY. And now of course the good thing is these songs are available on a real piece of vinyl courtesy of Dirty Water Records. It has 14 excellent tracks and some great liner notes from Dandy Dave. Currently they are recording a video for one of the songs, which one I don´t know yet and more on the record later when I get my copy. For now go see them live.Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-88097293845327740552010-06-09T10:43:00.017+02:002010-08-06T10:30:56.487+02:00Summer Means Fun - Part 1: The Untamed YouthBecause there´s a new City Trash, I was looking at the old ones, because here the summer has started, although now it´s suddenly raining, because they are coming to town, well my town at least and because in this landlocked region called Drenthe there is no good group combining surf, hotrod and garagepunk. So here´s an interview done with The Untamed Youth after their great show in Valencia in 2009 for the City Trash #34 (And don´t forget the latest one, #36, with interviews with The Make-Outs, the Junohoos, Mickey, The Vicious Teens and many more)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 212px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1cIEJ3yWUNm5O0NMCZJEK41aHJo6QTsxcnZ_5SyS_E7e1MTIP_2elt4ozEY4wIH-R-s132HL06GFvzmPGO-R3wGYr9wdwsQzx3iwqUsj0VGF3terbm8XSkh_3huKWMptzMcY7DD9DjBOe/s320/melodiesposter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480710185765248354" />An interview with Steve "Sammy" Rager from the Untamed Youth!!
(published in CT#34)
After 12 years we Europeans got finally another stab at experiencing the beer blast dance frenzy that is THE UNTAMED YOUTH. Without a doubt the highlight of last years concerts was their performance at the Funtastic Dracula Festival in Valencia Spain. Releasing a lot of albums and singles in the late 80s up to the late 90´s this is THE ultimate garagepunk, surf and hotrod group.
Thanks to modern days communication methods City Trash got in contact with Steve “Sammy” Rager, the organplayer for the Untamed Youth, and got to ask him some questions. By Gerben K.
# After several years of not playing together how did you end up playing at the Funtastic Dracula Carnival in Valencia?
The band gets the occasional offer but it's obviously rare when a show can be successfully put together. Deke has contacts in Europe from going over there pretty regularly with the Ecco-Fonics. I'm guessing that's how the offer to play Funtastic came about. Deke had been on tour in Europe and had played at the Freakland Festival, which is also in Spain. Through the years he has kept in touch with some of the same people who helped put together our European tour in 1996. When he got back home he emailed the offer to play at Funtastic to Mace and myself.
# How was meeting each other again? How long had it been since you got together and had seen one and other?
It's not like the three of us don't ever see each other. Deke's parents live here in Columbia, MO so I usually see him when he either plays a show here or comes to visit his parents for the occasional holiday or family birthday. Mace lives here in Columbia so I see him once in awhile. Occasionally we'll go see a local band together or go out for a drink. And don't forget, unless you don't know, Deke and Mace are step-brothers, so that gives them more reason to see each other when Deke comes to town. I think the last time I had seen Deke was when he played the Roots'n'Blues'n'BBQ festival here in town in Sept. '07. I think the last time time the three of us had hung out was around Christmas of '06. We met at a local bar and watched a local band consisting of a few friends of ours called the Bait Shop Boys. Other times when Deke has come to town but wasn't playing a show, the three of us would get together at my place and watch whatever cool rock videos I'd collected of late.
We just got together right before the holidays. Deke and Mace came over to my place. There was a lot of asking each other what happened to various people and bands from our past. Deke seems to know what everyone is doing. He asked us about mutual friends that still live in Columbia. Stuff like that.
Mace brought over his new upright bass. He had a few questions he knew Deke would know the answer to. Deke grabbed one of my acoustic guitars and they played a song or two together. Can't recall what though. For a few minutes it was just like the old days when the two of them would play together in front of Glen's Cafe in downtown Columbia.
Deke also strummed a few tunes while we were chatting. He always liked to make fun of my obsession with the Rolling Stones. He started picking "As Tears Go By" and shouted to me, "Take it, Mick!" Pretty funny. He's also great at ad-libbing, shall we say, off-color lyrics, to familiar songs. This time it was to "Claudette," the old Roy Orbison and Everly Brothers classic. I'll leave that to your imagination!
We looked at a few minutes of the Stooges reunion video. VH-1 had some show about metal bands that we looked at for a bit. We talked about potential senarios under which the Youth would play in 2009. But mainly, we tell stories and make fun of each other!
# No I didn´t know Mace and Deke were step-brothers. When you do get together, it´s just for a couple of beers, not playing some songs together?
It's kind of difficult to play without a drummer! Mace and I did sit in with Deke and Chris a couple of times when the Ecco-Fonics were in town. We'd do a handful of Youth songs at the end of Deke's set. But we haven't done that for a few years. We did that a couple of times leading up to our big Las Vegas Rockaround appearance in Sept. 2003. I think the last time was early 2004. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 199px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb5e_L8DufpUuxVAy6QiQ4kIICV-HU5N_LLpTIzeyPYvv67L74cHQtRqT-pb_Aqj73BiFYeC_blSVIs6n-1QKBzNNjKISksBQDWVhNIWkRuYAI_lZiayDYovwttv0qbDV4f7HLcXhxLCwZ/s320/Jarhead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480710718433458306" />
# For me the concert was great, terrific, words fail to give a good description, but I enjoyed it a lot. How was the concert for you?
Funtastic was a blast! Getting back onstage with Deke, Mace and Chris is basically an indescribable experience! There's a definite chemistry at work when the four of us are onstage together. It had been 5 years since we played the Las Vegas Rockaround!
We basically decided via email what songs we would play and then practiced them on our own. I would play along to the cds, just to get my timing back on track. To keep from getting burned out, I'd go back to stuff I originally learned the organ to, such as Question Mark, Animals, Lyres, Pebbles and other garage compilations, etc. Then we had one rehearsal in Valencia and a soundcheck. And except for a couple of minor rough spots, it was amazing! I can't wait to play again! I just hope there isn't another long delay before it happens! I think all of us had a blast and definitely want to play again in the near future! We'll just have to see what kind of buzz came from the Funtastic show and see if we get any good offers.
# Yeah! Let´s hope it´s not another 12 years before you get back to Europe.
I don't think it will be that long! I can't give anything away at this time, and I don't want to jinx anything, but we have been entertaining a few offers already! The band really enjoyed playing together again so I if the time and offer is right, we'll play again.
# What do you remember of the tour in ´96? Where did you play, any places particular you enjoyed?
We played 14 shows in seven countries in two 1/2 weeks. We covered a lot of ground! I'll attach a copy of the itinerary for you! We headlined all but one of the shows, if I remember correctly. There were a lot of great shows and audiences. There was one show in Spain, I think it was in San Sebastian at Komplot, where we must have signed things for a good half hour after the show was over! It wasn't that big of a crowd, but they were really into the band!
At Vera in Groningen, Holland, the crowd was nuts for us! It was pretty overwhelming! I almost passed out after that show from a combination of it being hot onstage and from the energy of the audience! They wouldn't let us quit playing! <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXcQDDRLqY-4LbsYyT1VPBRiPzq6_PJgIPjQe_w1Dk6JzAwbYwPoIivAQEWGbKWX5zKsLmMxY0u4D75a4_cBpkbi90D82C7nNrqaJAdgYrtdknRr1vzSrPFqRLtCsTnhwlBC7P1ul92Eu3/s320/europoster2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480715307483642210" />
The show at El Sol in Madrid was another great one! Our biggest known to exist fan recently said that show was a "life-changing experience", musically speaking, that is. That's pretty flattering! It was an amazing show! An amateur video tape exists supposedly, but no one has been sucessful at convincing the camera operater to cough it up! If anyone reading this has the tape or knows who has it, please contact me at srager@centurytel.net or through our MySpace site: www.myspace.com/untamedyouth
A funny, but genius thing happened on the flight home from London to Chicago. A few minutes after taking our seats, Deke comes back to where Mace and I were sitting and said, "Ray Davies is sitting in First Class!" Mace and I immediately shot out of our seats. I grabbed my memo book and a pen and headed to the front of the plane. There sitting by himself, or at least sitting next to no one in particular, was indeed Ray Davies! I built up the courage to ask him for an autograph. He was about to begin the latest leg of his "20th Century Man" solo tour. So I took the chance to tell him I was aware of his tour but hadn't been able to see it yet. He asked Mace and myself what we were doing overseas. We told him our band had just finished a tour of Europe. He asked what band we were in and one of told him Untamed Youth. He said, "Oh, cool band!" Hard to say if he really knew who we were. Neither of us had any Youth cds at the time or I'm sure we would have given him one. When we landed at O'Hare airport, there was Ray and his guitar player hanging out in baggage claim, minding their own business. I didn't see anyone staring at him either. I remember wondering, how can anyone not know who this guy is?
# After the Vera show I bought the Untamed Whirl #6 which pretty much stated the Untamed Youth already had stopped, making the 1996 European tour also sort of a reunion tour. It had been some time a full length had appeared, so do you remember how this tour finally happened?
The band did it's first "reunion" show in Columbia in late April of 1995. That came about because Deke had been asked by Dave Crider of Estrus to get the band back together for the Garage Shock festival in May. Crider was releasing the "Live In Las Vegas" cd and wanted the Youth to reunite to promote the cd. Promoters for the Missouri Derby and Springfest heard about the Youth playing at Garage Shock and approached us to play in Columbia.
At Garage Shock, like most of the big festivals, various promoters attend to check out bands and such. That's how we met Cecilia Meneau from France (of the No Talents). At the time she was booking bands. She contacted Deke after the Garage Shock festival and that's how the European Tour came about in spring of '96.
# The tour seemed to have made a lot of impact, because after that the Untamed Youth were back releasing in the next 3 years, 2 LPs (Planet Mace & Youth Runs Wild both on Norton) and some 45s. How did that work, because you and Mace were living in Columbia, MO and Deke living in California, I don´t know where Joel was living at the time.
Considering how things have been the past ten years, it's hard to believe we got active again! But yeah, we did a lot of recording and played quite a few shows between '96-'98. Joel was living in Tacoma, WA. Basically, once we decided to record, Deke would send cassettes of his new songs and the covers he wanted to do. Mace would write a couple of songs also. Mace, Joel and I would learn the songs Deke had sent as best we could. Back in those days, pre-email, Deke would send me faxes at work. Sometimes the faxes would even be chords to one of the new songs!
# How did you record the songs and how did you arrange the shows?
Deke would usually set up a show or two in the Los Angeles area, or even in Vegas, to help pay for our flight tickets. We knocked out Planet Mace in two, all-day sessions. We did the same for Youth Runs Wild! except Deke spent a few days on his own overdubbing vocals, instruments, guest vocals, etc.
When we got to the studio our primary goal was to get all the basic tracks down live, meaning guitar, drums and at least bass. I overdubbed quite a few of my organ parts, especially if I had a solo. Deke would lay down a "scratch" vocal as a guide to play along to. It would take most of the first day just to get good takes for the basic tracks. Talk about pressure! Sure we had a decent idea of how the songs went from the work tapes Deke had sent us, but playing them yourself is nothing like getting the timing down with a band! It was really high stress!
# On the Youth Runs Wild! Record there´s a song called Dance Sammy Dance. What´s the story behind this, whose idea was this, not yours I think?
The band had been playing Floyd Dakil Combo's "Dance Franny Dance" since the early '90s, when I wasn't in the band. I think we continued to occasionally play it around the times the reunions were going on. We were in the van driving to a show at the LaFayette Ballroom in Bloomington, IL in 1997. Deke was driving and I was riding shotgun. He just starts singing "Dance Franny Dance" but begins ad-libbing new lyrics, magically turning it into "Dance Sammy Dance". That's how it happened! And starting that night, and ever since, that song has been in the set list! And of course, the catch was, I had to perform this nutty dance during the guitar solo! By now, everyone knows about it and screams for it. So it's become as much a part of our set as the beer tricks!
# Any chance you now will start recording again some songs?
That's something that hasn't even been discussed. It takes a lot of advance planning. Most record labels expect a band to tour if they put up the money for the recording sessions and then release a cd. I don't know if any label would want to spend the money on a band that basically can't do any extensive touring. I'll bring that up though when Mace, Deke and I get together here in a few weeks. You aren't the first to ask that question, by the way.
# By the way was it your first time in Europe, or had you been here before?
The tour of '96 was my first time to Europe. When it was all over, I honestly didn't know if I'd ever get back there. In some ways I'd love to return and just do the tourist thing, but to hit all those towns we played would be very costly and time consuming. We only had 3 days off during that tour so we didn't get to see much. We had a day off in London, Paris and one other. But on those rare days off you really need to get some rest, so we didn't do all that much tourist stuff. I'd love to go back to London and see all the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, etc. related sites. Stuff like the Marquee Club and 100 Club, Apple Records offices, Konk Studios, Abbey Road Studios, things like that. I'd love to see all the Beatles sites in Liverpool also. But if I could, I'd love to go back to all of the places and towns we played just to see them again! I wish I had taken pictures of the outside of all of the clubs we played.
# Is there a big difference between a European audience and an American audience?
Yes! Well, it depends on where you are playing. The European audiences tend to be way less inhibited! In certain parts of the States, audiences seem to think it's uncool or something, to go nuts! There's always exceptions, of course, New York audiences were always very enthusiastic. But the best, loudest audiences in the states, are always at the festivals. I was blown away by the response at Garage Shock '95 in Bellingham, WA, for instance. And the Las Vegas Grind in '99 was great, as well! <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSWFgf_O2MDXV1ffeYZz9uLIBNMMojK2wAanWZYyREG563ShVakneum_u2A7SXh20Cwor-DIFgQotBv4kbsscUGEokRbXMe4dq5R6a8HJcgkM91Magvu6kjTe_i2Pz6pSGbjU1hmZmWghZ/s320/europoster3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480717571130248818" /> But yeah, the audiences in Europe are great! The shows I have the most vivid memory of from '96 were at Vera, in Groningen, Holland, and El Sol in Madrid, Spain. The audience in Koln, Germany at The Underground were quite enthusiastic also!
# You said that before the Funtastic the last time you played together was in 2003 in Las Vegas. What happened after that with Untamed Youth? Did you play in other bands since 2003 back home in MO?
We had played a warm-up show for the Rockaround at the Blue Note, here in Columbia. After the Rockaround we only played one more time before Funtastic. Mace and I joined Deke and Chris at Mojo's here in town, for a few Youth songs at the end of an Ecco-Fonics show. That was in Feb. 2004.
Mace and I don't play in local bands for various reasons. The main reason is inability to find musicians that are into the same stuff that we are. But even if we could find other like-minded musicians, they won't compare with Deke so it would always be inferior to Untamed Youth. I think if we ever do play in a local band again, it would be a quiet kind of outfit. Maybe a band with no drummer. I could play acoustic guitar. Mace has an upright bass. But finding the right musicians is very difficult. And somebody has to be the leader with the vision. And somebody would have to be able to sing lead, and that's not Mace or myself! That's for sure!
# Well Mace ain´t no Deke, but he sure can sing tunes like `The Crusher´ and `They can´t call it beer´.
Yeah! Mace does a great job with those songs and "Mailbox Jamboree", etc. But you wouldn't expect him to be a lead vocalist in a band. He's great at shouting though!
# Yes, I just saw the Untamed Youth DVD´s and on there he´s doing some fine shouting on the Mace Theme Song: Mace King of Men. Why didn´t that appear on any of the records?
I have no idea! I can't recall why we only played it once either! But I thought it was funny enough to include as a bonus track on the "Show-A-Rama" dvds. Glad we had just happened to record that show!
# Deke is the leader with vision? How is working with him?
Easy for me, for the most part, since I don't demand the spotlight and lots of organ solos. I try to let Deke and Mace be the center of attention. They started the band, wrote and sing the songs, so they deserve the most recognition.
# He is a fulltime musician right?
Yes, Deke plays music for a living. But he also writes a column for Guitar Player magazine and has written liner notes for various box sets and compilation cds. He also has his own record label. So he keeps very busy.
# Are there bands around at the moment that you like?
You know, I try to listen to new bands and I occasionally check out new bands that come thru town, but I can't think of any that really stand out. Most of the indie rock bands are disappointing. A couple of years ago I went to Chicago to the Pitchfork Festival and none of those bands did anything for me. But I spend a bit of time listening to the XMU channel on Sirius-XM satellite radio. I try to keep somewhat up to date with new music, but usually end up tuning to Little Steven's Underground Garage.
# What kind of music are you listening to at home?
Since the Sirius and XM merger just took place a few weeks back, I have been listening to satellite radio the most, both at home and in my car. I check out Bob Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour" and Tom Petty's "Buried Treasure". But like I said, I spend the most time listening to Little Steven's Underground Garage.
I'm actually starting to spin a bit of vinyl of late. I got this new pre-amp and subwoofer that really improved the sound of my vinyl records. The other day I listened to the first Bangles album, "All Over the Place". I'd forgotten just how good that record is! I also recently dug out the Swingin' Neckbreakers first album and some Rhino Christmas compilations.
I watch a lot of music video stuff. I've been trading and collecting for years and years. Yesterday I was watching "All Dolled Up", the documentary on the New York Dolls. Some of the live footage in that is pretty amazing! Seeing a young, fresh-faced Johnny Thunders rocking out is definitely cool! What a shame though, what happened to that guy. I also just watched "New York Doll", the documentary on Arthur "Killer" Kane, the Dolls' bass player that hit rock bottom and became a mormon. It's great that he lived long enough to play in the Dolls reunion, his dream, but so sad that he died 22 days after that show.
# What kind of music video stuff are you collecting?
I primarily look for live performances, TV appearances and promotional films, usually stuff that has never come out commercially.
# What´s the most cherished possession?
Hard to say. Most of what I used to think was ultra rare has shown up on YouTube. I couldn't really say what my most cherished possession is. I'd have to spend a long time going thru my list to come up with something.
# How did you actually get in contact with this kind of music?
Probably from getting into the Lyres. I liked the surf stuff, too, but would mainly get into that after joining the Youth. But I can safetly say, seeing the Lyres at Trito's Uptown in Champaign, IL in 1985 was a life-changing experience. I wasn't even playing keyboards at the time. A few weeks after that show, word got to me that a VOX Jaguar organ signed by Jeff "Monoman" Conolly was for sale, there in Champaign. I had to have it! Once the organ was in my possession, I frantically started learning not only Lyres songs, but also stuff on the "Pebbles" compilations and other organ based bands like Question Mark and Paul Revere & the Raiders. I had taken piano lessons as a kid but gave it up. I then played saxophone in the grade school band for a while. But I really wanted to play like Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere and the Raiders, but those kind of lessons didn't seem to be available. For a very short time I took up drums, but they cost too much for a complete set and took too long to set up! So I quit that! Then I finally took up the guitar. I had avoided guitar for a long time, even though that's what I really wanted to play. But my older brother was already playing guitar and I just couldn't play the same instrument that he was playing. That is, until I couldn't stand it anymore! But after seeing the Lyres, I just fell in love with that '60s organ sound!
# You joined the Untamed Youth in ´88. They had already released the album Some kinda fun. How did you meet Mace and Deke and get to be part of the Untamed Youth? What where you doing at that time (study, work)?
I first came to Columbia to meet and jam with Deke, Mace and Clarke in Oct. 1988. The band had recorded "Some Kinda Fun" in June with Chris Fletcher on organ, but it didn't come out until January 1989. I was working a 4 day work week at a TV station in Peoria, IL. Once the the band asked me to join, which was right away, I started driving to Columbia on my 3 day weekends.
At the time, I could hardly even play! But they were pretty desperate to keep the band going. I was at least the third organ player they'd had in two years. Doug Walker was the organ player when the band formed in the fall of 1986.
How I came to meet the Youth is sort of a long story. One of my friends in Peoria knew Deke from having met at record shows. When Deke told him he was looking for an organ player for the Youth, this friend told Deke about me, but basically told him there was NO WAY I'd quit my television job and move to Missouri!
This friend of mine in Peoria had co-written a feature in KICKS magazine with me, so I had a Billy Miller/Miriam Linna connection already. In the summer of 1988, I went to New York City with another Peoria friend and stayed with Billy and Miriam. At some point Billy asked me if I knew Deke or had heard of the Untamed Youth. He laid out their predicament, first album coming out soon but with no one currently playing organ. He suggested I write to Deke and see if maybe we could play together sometime. So I did. But this letter was rather innocently suggesting I drive to Columbia some weekend and play with them.
I got a letter back from Deke rather quickly asking me to join the band! It's funny now, but he had never heard me play a note! And like I said, at the time, I could hardly play! He sends me a tape of the "Some Kinda Fun" album and a few other things to learn. I took a few organ lessons first, so I could actually sort of play that lead in "Some Kinda Fun", among other parts. In mid-October I made my first trip to Columbia.
The first practice was great! Deke, Mace and Clarke all wanted me to join. I continued to drive back and forth on weekends from Peoria to Columbia until the spring of 1989. But before I would commit to moving to Columbia I had to be sure I could handle the touring grind. In Feb. of '89 we set out on a short tour of the east coast that included playing at Billy and Miriam's wedding reception in Brooklyn.
The other shows on that first tour included stops we would return to numerous times in the next two years: the Funhouse in Bethlehem, PA, the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ, Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ and The Rat in Boston, MA, legendary home of the Remains, DMZ and the Lyres.
Shortly after surviving that first tour, I put in my two weeks notice at my television job, said goodbye to Peoria and moved to Columbia, MO. It was mid-April 1989.
# How long was the drive actually from Peoria to Columbia?
It's about 5 hours. I still go back there a few times a year to see family and old friends.
# What article for Kicks did you co-write?
I co-wrote a feature on the Rockin' R's with a friend of mine. They were a 50's rockabilly band, from Peoria specializing in cool instrumentals. Their main hits were "The Beat" and "Crazy Baby" and at one point performed on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand".
# Are you like Deke also a big record collector?
I'd say so, yes. When I first discovered some of the bands written about in KICKS and bands the Lyres and Cramps covered, I was seeking out stuff all the time! Deke's collection focuses way more on obscure 7" singles than mine does. All these guys who have lots of rare 7" singles like Deke, Jeff Conolly, Billy Miller, Todd Abramson, Tim Warren, have a unique talent and eye for weird, off-beat stuff. I've never had that ability, patience or nose to sniff that stuff out. My collection focuses more on compilation albums, box sets, lots of LPs and cds.
# The Untamed Youth can write a good song, but I always wondered where some of the covers came from like for instance The Apparitions `She´s so satisfying´, Debbie Lori Kaye´s `Iron cross´and The Motions `Land beyond the moon´. Who picks the songs?
The Springfield Missouri band, The Royal Nonesuch, had been playing "She's So Satisfying" before the Youth did, or possibly around the same time. I think Deke got it from the Apparitions original version. Deke always picked the songs. Everything was his vision, from the covers we played to the clothes we wore to the gimmicks we staged at our local shows. But Billy Miller guided Deke towards surf, hot rod, instrumentals and frat rock so that we wouldn't just be another garage band playing "Pebbles" covers.
# Are there particular songs you love playing with the Untamed Youth?
I like all of them really, especially the ones we've sort of settled on since the Las Vegas Grind show in '99.
# Any songs you might want to add to the set list?
I'm hoping we rotate a few in the next time we play. It's just finding the time to rehearse songs we haven't played in awhile. I'd maybe add "Land Beyond the Moon," "Alright", "Sea and Shore". Maybe bring back "What'll Ya Have" or "They Can't Call It Beer." I always liked playing "Mailbox Jamboree" also. I always liked "Two Wheel Show Stopper," but we've never played that live. "I'm More Punk Than You!" is a good rocker. "Supercharged Steamroller" is a fun one, if only Deke could remember the talking bit in the middle!
# Do you know how Untamed Youth ended up releasing the debut on Norton?
Deke had become friends with Billy Miller at some point. I think he sent Miller some tapes of the Youth. I believe Billy, Miriam and Todd Abramson came thru Columbia and watched the Youth practice, or something like that. Billy booked a small tour of the east coast, liked what he saw and heard, and signed them for 3 albums. He also advised Deke on what direction the band should go in. He suggested they combine surf, hot rod instrumentals and frat tunes with the garage stuff the band was playing at the time.
# You played on the More Gone Gassers and Sophisticated International Playboys albums on Norton. The story is that lawsuits were threatened because of the sleeve of the last record. I always thought this was kind of a joke or is it true?
Even though some of what you read in the Untamed Whirls is a bit exaggerated to get the most laughs, the story about the threatened lawsuit is true! In fact, the letter from Rev. Billy Graham's lawyers threatening to sue Norton Records was printed in Untamed Whirl #6! Deke has the original album of the Singing Palermo's that we swiped the artwork from for our Sophisticated International Playboys cover proudly on display in his living room. The album was immediately taken off the market and hasn't been sold anywhere since. Billy Miller joked in the liner notes for "Untamed Melodies" that it was withdrawn after selling 36 copies. Now that, I believe, is a joke. It was probably more like 50 copies! Ha!
# By the way what can you tell me about the Sophisticated International Playboys Club? Does it still exist? Did a lot of people join?
Deke originally started it. Members got all of the "Untamed Whirl" fan magazines, an 8x10 signed glossy photo, a 7" single, a membership card and a t-shirt. None of us has any of the kits left so it's safe to say the club doesn't exist anymore. The last time Deke checked the Norton website, they still had a couple of the fan club kits, so you may wanna check there. Deke joked, or maybe he was serious, that the club has something like 34 members. Ha! <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 217px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsMnbUxSt4DynFXn7NRhsQaIqi8OxVtZVgHTvFUK7wtHK1cX_xZvA74hvGQfQr-cqLOVL48dsHBk7h5KwB6SWGzctfTyPnshuk6kgN8aPop3z7baOBFH8OVSdh2K-aYZyJl0pL-AXEaqoD/s320/funhouse2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480712037734788418" />
# Did you play a lot of shows with the Untamed Youth between ´88-´90?
Let me refer to a few notes here. At last count, around 90. Which isn't all that many really. But you have to keep in mind, the kind of music we played, surf/hot rod/instrumental/garage/frat, wasn't all that hip in those days. It wasn't exactly easy to get gigs. Deke booked most of the midwest shows. Billy Miller (Norton Records) and Todd Abramson (Telstar Records and booking agent for Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ) booked most of the east coast shows. I think Deke booked most of the west coast shows also.
My first ever onstage appearance with the Youth was at a little place in Fulton, MO called Mike and Laura's on Nov. 11, 1988. Deke, Mace and Clarke were actually booked as Deke Rivers and the Lucky Strikes that night. That was their side rockabilly band. I joined them for a set of Youth stuff at some point in the evening. We basically paid our rent with money we earned playing shows. We all lived together in the same house. Yikes! Don't ask for stories about living with Deke, Mace and Clarke! I wouldn't know where to begin!
And speaking of side bands, Deke, Mace and I started a cool "oldies" band with Joel Trueblood while Clarke was still in the Youth. We called the band, The Marksmen. We tried to keep the band as secret as possible so our Columbia fans would never see us play! We were kind of embarrassed that we had to stoop to this level just to pay the rent! Of course, we'd tell our absolute best friends so they could come out. But we'd never play any of the same clubs where the Youth would play. We had a booking agent who'd get us gigs primarily out of town. It was fun. We only played really cool songs. We'd get requests for the usual redneck anthems like "Old Time Rock'n'Roll" and just say, "Sorry. We don't know that one!" Ha! We'd do songs by Paul Revere & the Raiders, Monkees, Dave Clark 5, Flamin' Groovies, a few Stones, Kinks and Beatles, Elvis, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Beach Boys, Question Mark, a few surf instrumentals. Stuff like that. Don't ask me for any audio or video tapes! As far as I know, none exist!
# You know I have to ask, give us at least one typical story bout the going-on´s in the Untamed Youth Mansion?
For the most part it's best to leave this to the readers' imagination. I'll just say those days were the equivalent to the dormitory life I never had in college! Sometimes as many as 5 or 6 people living in a house that would comfortably hold 2! We even set up a bedroom in the cold, unfinished basement for a friend.
When I moved in, my bedroom was basically what should have been the dining room. All of my records, video tapes and stereo equipment had to go into Mace's room. He had by far the biggest room of any of us! The front room was divided into two rooms by a piece of plywood. We basically made a two bedroom house into a 5 bedroom house, counting the one in the basement. My parents could not believe I subjected myself to such a low-brow existence!
We lived on 69 cent frozen pizzas! There was a huge Youth fan working at the local Little Ceasar's who used to give us free pizza whenever he was working. We called it "Rock Star Pizza". That part of it was pretty genius!
I'd say the most memorable day had to be when the Cramps and the Flat Duo Jets came over to the Youth house. We had played with them the night before at the Blue Note. Talk about a great show! Lux even video taped our show from the side of the stage with his then new video camera. That's another tape I've never seen, though I thought at the time that I was going to trade Lux for a copy. I remember we had to lobby rather hard to get on that bill! It's rare that the Cramps allow a third band on one of their bills. Needless to say, we were really excited when word got back that the Cramps were allowing us to play with them. We had heard they were fans of ours, probably from Dave Stuckey, who was friends with them.
This was April of 1990. It was Lux, Ivy, Nick Knox and Candy Del Mar. "Stay Sick" was their album at the time. All four Cramps came over to our place! Deke showed them his "Hideous Vomit Creatures from Planet X-9" film and they seemed to enjoy it. I remember giving Candy an Untamed Youth t-shirt. She actually remembered me from when we originally met at a Youth show at the Gaslight in Los Angeles the year before! I have to admit I was impressed!
I also recall watching their soundcheck with Youth friend, Rabid Rick Carter, and then going to a nearby store called the Nostalgia Shop with the band. I later got all four of them to sign a copy of the gig flyer. It was a pretty cool moment in Youth history.
# Any great stories you remember from being on the road?
I think the best road stories are documented in Untamed Whirl #6 and at our official website, www.juvalamu.com/youth The best one was probably when our '68 Oldsmobile Hearse broke down smack dab in the middle of a very bad part of Newark, New Jersey. I'll never forget! It was June 13, 1990. There was a show that night at the Funhouse in Bethlehem, PA. A member of the opening band, the Creatures, drove all the way to Jersey to take us to the show. But obviously, somebody had to stay with the Hearse. So guess what instrument was voted least important that night? You guessed it, keyboard!
I was pretty much petrified! I closed the curtains of our broken down touring vehicle, hoping no one would dare mess with a Hearse! I took a knockout pill and eventually passed out holding a tire iron (or so legend has it) across my chest! Luckily, the next people I saw were Deke and a friend at about 4 o'clock the next morning.
I'd say another major hi-light for me in particular was playing the Double Door in Chicago on the opening night of our tour with Southern Culture on the Skids in May '98. The previous September. the Rolling Stones played a secret show on that very stage! To this day, especially after playing there and seeing a video of the Stones' show, I still can't figure out how they squeezed 13 musicians onto that tiny stage! It wasn't exactly a spacious stage for just the 4 members of the Youth!
# What were the highlights during that period? On the DVD´s you can see TV-show performances.
We did two shows of "It's Happening" .The "It's Happening" shows were both taped the same day in a studio in Carlsbad, CA. Ron Silva was our drummer for the west coast shows at that time, so he's in both programs. We were interviewed by the hosts, Domenic Priorie and Audrey Moorehead and played about 4 songs per show. We had to change the words of "Pabst Blue Ribbon" to "Yee Haw"! That was weird! Since Pabst is a brand of beer, we couldn't use that title.
The set built for the "It's Happening" show was these huge longboards with nothing holding them up! When we launched into "I'm Going Away" the longboards started collapsing like dominos onto our equipment! I had to jump out of the way to keep one of them from landing on me! That clip aired on "Entertainment Tonight" the next year in a segment about weird things that happen on cable access TV shows! That turned out to be our biggest exposure! Before that it had to be when NBC TV aired a bit of "Santa's Gonna Shut 'Em Down" during the credits of the holiday airing of "Friday Night Videos." That was pretty cool!
Art Fein had a cable access show called "Little Art's Texas Barbeque". He recorded our show at the Anti-Club in Hollywood. He split that show into two broadcasts and added some interviews. One show also included a couple of other bands on the bill. Ron Silva was our drummer for that taping also.
# With what bands did you share the stage?
There's been quite a few cool bands that we've played with thru the years. We played with Screamin' Jay Hawkins in both Columbia and in St. Louis. Same goes for Cordell Jackson, both in Columbia and St. Louis. We played a few shows out west with the Mummies and Phantom Surfers. Before I was in the band, they opened for the Lyres here in Columbia, in Hoboken, NJ and in Boston, MA. We did a two week tour with Southern Culture on the Skids. We played with Ben Vaughn, Young Fresh Fellows, Swingin' Neckbreakers, A-Bones, the Gories. Who could forget the time we opened for the Flat Duo Jets and the Cramps here in Columbia? Then we played a Dictators reunion show in NY with 3/4 of the Smithereens, calling themselves Green Thoughts. We also opened for Link Wray at First Avenue during the tour with Southern Culture on the Skids. During the encore Deke and Rick Miller joined Link onstage. Deke played bass while Link and Rick traded licks! It's was a pretty cool moment, for sure! I took pictures from the side of the stage. A couple of them turned out really well! We also played with Alex Chilton at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. He even joined in during our soundcheck for "Monkey See, Monkey Do". He played sort of an incoherent guitar solo, if I recall correctly!
# And what is this story about playing at a bowling party from Phil Spector?
We didn't play at the bowling party, but initially thought we were going to. Art Fein was a friend of ours and big buds with Phil Spector. In fact, Art was in charge of the invitations for these legendary bowling parties that Spector would occasionally throw. It was at the Montrose bowling alley in California. A cast of thousands was there: Syd Griffin, Dave Alvin, James Intveld, Dave Stuckey, Ron Silva, Domenic Priorie. I wrote in the notes I took that I played pinball with Dave Alvin! I honestly don't recall that, but it must have happened!
Everything was free, the bowling, cheeseburgers, onion rings, booze. I thought Spector wasn't going to show up. But he finally did, and with his gun-carrying bodyguards! He just hung out in a booth with a long-haired hippie in a Los Angeles Lakers jersey. Legend has it the guy was the former lead singer of Vanilla Fudge!
When we were getting ready to leave Deke summoned the courage to approach Phil and get his autograph. Once Deke did it, I had to! I approached him with some sort of half page flyer with the name of the bowling alley on it and had him sign the blank back side. In the notes I took for that amazing moment, I quote Phil as saying to me, "Why do people ask for these things?" As if he isn't/wasn't a big deal. This was Sunday night, Sept. 10, 1989.
# In ´91 Deke and Mace move to California, taking the Untamed Youth there. Why didn´t you join them? <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 209px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtltGjX2kqhuldSMZ1k2T9WzRRyyCK7q1WYBi03TzpszHtxOF8YgU8dsg-u3y3kYEQ6i6hlM4jThxdMvM6Q4vJCgUHVytEvWjjPulzqcqihALtQYdZNa4OJY1xglCLmJlYq9C6BAjUy9HN/s320/ymaxgreasy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5480718289780748626" />
Deke and Mace knew the band was never going to make it being based out of Columbia, MO. Deke was making some contacts in California to form a rockabilly/hillbilly band with Dave Stuckey, later to become the Dave and Deke Combo. Deke got Dave Stuckey to agree to play drums in the Youth as part of the bargain. Mace and Deke were going to CA whether I went or not. It wasn't really a group decision.
I tried to make a few contacts in California, trying to score a job in television like I had in Peoria. Nothing was materializing. I wasn't going to move to California without a regular job and just play in the Youth. It cost too much to live out there on what the band would make. I was working full-time in Columbia and decided to stay. I honestly didn't think a surf band was going to become rock stars no matter where it was based from. On November 3, 1990 at the High Pointe in St. Louis, I played what I thought at the time would be my last ever show with the Youth.
Deke and Mace loaded up their van and headed to sunny California the first week of 1991. I stayed behind living in the old Youth house for another 7 years or so. It was definitely a joyous, but very strange moment, when the band reunited for the first time in April '95, returning to the very same rehearsal space in the basement of the old Youth house. That house just went up for sale, by the way! I thought about buying it at one time, but the place needed too much work. I ended up buying a house across the street from it! This way, I can always keep my eye on it! Ah, the memories!
# What did you actually think when the movie Pulp Fiction appeared in´94 and all of a sudden there was a lot more interest in surf? Must have come as a surprise.
Indeed! After all these years of being looked upon as uncool or just not hip, all of a sudden it was cool to play surf music. I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason Dave Crider decided to release "Live in Las Vegas" and wanted the band to play at Garage Shock '95. But when we played in Columbia at Springfest, there still wasn't a big crowd while we were playing. But the place filled up when it was time for Coolio to play!
# Haha I guess in the end not much changed. Any final comments, any advise for the kids out there that might want to start a garage hotrod surf band?
I'd say go for it! However, I'd advise any band interested in playing similar music to the Youth to proceed only if they are doing it for fun. If they have an interest in really becoming a star, like a real rock star, forget it. But I will say, the Youth have been able to see and do a lot of things that most bands can only dream of. For that, we are quite fortunate and very lucky. Every now and then, like when playing a big festival, or being able to say we played at places like CBGB and The Rat, to name but two, and in some of the worlds coolest cities, like London, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Vancouver, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, etc., it feels pretty good!

Thanks Steve for filling us in on everything about the Untamed Youth!

Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-65146738533863545432010-05-17T22:06:00.008+02:002010-05-19T10:41:12.931+02:00The Vicious Teens are back!!!The Vicious Teens are back, fortunately this will be a one time event, this Saturday in their local hangout Clouso in Meppel, a place where they have wasted too much time and too much money. These punkrockers have not performed in almost ten years, and why now is still a bit of a riddle, but no reason for complaining. It´s a chance to once again hear some of their great throwaway punk songs they played in the late 90s inspired mostly by groups like Loli & the Chones, Teengenerate, the Queers and a lot of bands on the fine Rip-off label. Oh and not unimportant 2 other great bands will be playing that evening as well the Junohoos all the way from Groningen and the Zodiac Killers from the US. The Vicious Teens will of course be playing first so be on time!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN5qqvXgDgSb5tYRIlZYR01SKdBjlCifBqCopgcNTGPUaJmFWcU3aJo4jev36O_FLHP2UkPDsx5M5q-tLZVFuKDVhWbs0qQUGgWhJ8CKdLErBsF_AqWX5ngnmPA42upOiXY9FiAdDaB_Lx/s320/zdkvt.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472884541667427106" />

The Vicious Teens - Don´t mess with me

The Vicious Teens - Stay out

The Vicious Teens - I want it
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-46488489696553040462010-04-09T15:35:00.006+02:002010-04-09T17:15:52.825+02:00The Grapefruit Zoo at the Dolhuis!!!This sunday afternoon finally there´s an opportunity for witnessing the beer drinking freakbeaters the Grapefruit Zoo. The happening is in honour of the new CD of the Heatwave out on Grey Past Records (for details on this great CD see below) with special guest Willem de Ridder, the essential Dee-Jees and our beloved group out of Drenthe. Their sole release is a great 7" with the crude little stomper called "Said before it couldn´t happen to me" which originally of course is from the Heatwave and was on Grey Past as well. It comes in a fantastic sleeve and was one of the finest 45s of last year. No doubt they´ll perform this killer and for this occasion include in their setlist, which by now should be filled with songs of their own, some other fine Heatwave songs. It starts early, at about 4pm, so we´re talking about an all day and allnighter, and surely our boys, Ruubm, Vinner and Peter, are going to prove the saying "Hoe dichter bij Dordt, hoe rotter het wordt" wrong.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipJWvQXwOIW57ic7y3E5GYoKyQ2w9f1PuRuzxsXXUdY-NpCiOlcy9LwH1yzFe_afENqqHXyXalR6RwxLI_4TK7iLzFuKfetS4fWWenFHZagBOS5JSjlIcumLwFfLXHIJ0ntx-agFUX2-O3/s320/heatwaveflyer.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458137993290906658" />
Brandnew Grey Past records CD release of unreleased tracks by Dutch 67/ 68 Freakbeat band the Heatwave. 10 Amazing extra tracks and serious enhanced soundquality making this a true document of that period in popmusic everything seemed possible and most of the runners-up never released a piece of vinyl. The Heatwave were outstanding musicians and even better they were adventurous and fantastic songwriters. They just had bad luck. Read the fantastic liners!!! 23 Songs here on this CD and none is bad or even average. Also included their sole unreleased 45 and the instrumental track to the B-side with a long acidguitar solo ending. Bandmembers later joined the Zipps. Only 500 copies were made so act fast. Postage around the world is 3$. For registered postage Europeans must add 5$, overseas 8$. This CD took more than a year to make just to get it as good as possible. The fullcolour booklet contains 36 pages with also as an extra special words by Dutch 60s guru Willem de Ridder!Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-74563775150720624592010-03-26T16:56:00.011+01:002010-03-30T20:49:09.357+02:00The Kong-Kings!!!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimyoSiZMoBS-LxQvIru7pAsSVQnpRZvJE4kq88cEWjOa1lq9kzdcTe21jMFQgCcgcDA5l58YUIBtsyqvOGAijxYwa3vsYpYK6e1vD2kaV5QiSRjePg9HekQJkVY6vSDzBbP0TSB6yWUsIu/s320/KK1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452972899414232802" />
Some days ago I was invited over by some juveniles to a smoky bar in one of the suburbs of Noordscheschutte. Unfamiliar with their group I was a bit reluctant, but upon entering “De Stee” I see three young guys occupy the stage. This is a good start. Too often we are confronted with old men doing some punk rock just to get past their midlife crisis. The band members are all either nineteen or twenty, perhaps still going to high school. Calling themselves The Kong-Kings, Johnny Kong, Marky Kong and Pete Kong are playing for some friends and the regulars on this Friday night. Too much music is fake, done because it’s cool or because they’re trying to become famous. I could tell instantly that this was the real shit. These boys have no other choice. The only music that they will ever play is bluesy rock´n´roll. It’s in their blood, just as much as drinking a cold beer or watching FC Groningen (probably). Judging is wrong when you think about it, but always judge a man by his shoes. I saw two pairs of converse all stars and one pair of Beatle boots. We can now proceed with the rocking portion of the evening seeing as they have passed the shoe test. Kicking off with their theme tune and then hitting me with a sure athem "I can see it in your eyes". And they know their stuff, covering some Meppel classics; “Love” originally from the Garage Kids, “I want it” from the Josephs & “Psychedelic Blues” from the No-Goods. Recently they also recorded a fine bunch of tunes, easily available through their myspace, www.myspace.com/kongkings. On there the last one is properly titled Psychedelic Blooz, because it swaggers all over the place. Like the boys, changing instruments whenever they feel like it. Johnny fell over the bass drum, Marky was bumming a fag and Pete would riff, solo, wail…whatever. Trying to decide whether a band is fucked on drugs is great. They could be smacked, drunked, coked out of their mind…or they could be so into the music that they are just feeling it, soaking it in, feeling like a sponge. An acquaintance of mine said if they tightened up they’d be great. No, fuck you…they are great, stuff like this is best left sloppy, bowing at the home plate of Chuck Berry, the New York Dolls and the Oblivians. It’s times like this when I’m at my happiest…when I see a band DOING IT RIGHT!!! Like nothing else matters. That god himself has divinely inspired the group in front of me in such ways that perfection isn’t an option, it’s the only choice. The recordings they made are no let down either and captures their spirit on stage perfectly. These Noordscheschutters connected to me. I can smell my own, they pissed in my face, and we were soon apes on the same rock.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 138px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHc4BoFBaNS92Z9OWAmL_R3_mrjyfxErDCXuOulT5KcpYipYu7hEcQSwuPVzrPX0_vuZUx4V6dBUTzeQGcW8MknIqXwF8jahUsifT7Q4APGisiEOSd0_V9oqxFXnv3bDEwR9o9BgYRx1Mj/s320/KK2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452973003237971026" />
The Kong-Kings - I can see it in your eyes
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-57781272610566333042010-03-12T12:37:00.004+01:002010-03-12T13:53:40.594+01:00Upcoming concerts11 april The Grapefruit Zoo/The Heatwave het Dolhuis Dordrecht
22 may The Zodiac Killers/ The Junohoos/ The Vicious Teens Clouso Meppel
11-12 june Go Sinner Go Madrid with De Keefmen!!
13-19 juni De Keefmen Spanish Tour
more info later!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR80DAtjn-24vU46hI8L8BqexxTdFuSiCQnPCHp4_sjhjC9tvSpMl4Y-gEXmNmGKQ3Y7P9tZzIszfzZf8W5NSXFQbMxQSVeHOiz5yk2OcUU96mFbuzD5SWvqt5f8K1q1me1hkypJ3jsj5l/s320/gsg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447710509146702194" />Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-11141866010279997352010-03-05T11:12:00.004+01:002010-03-05T15:42:46.878+01:00A message from ....<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSdStMdHswfwvHRUz6A2IOLulBwK0irbgQLOpb_TcU0wmSEvjFTaXfGUGamIJLB02FEUXArR8f4KYmKp7ZRsenoW4oePH17BvPgtHsI-7wdG4QwqnqIks8wwwNJxg69QmMMBT6sTsv2vDU/s320/no-goods.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445102123155239330" />
Hey here's Mark the Beatle aka Mark from the No-Goods, reviewing the latest single release of my own band. Well, what can I say? Ok, I'm very happy with this one. In my opinion on this 7" a good sound is captured, it was recorded by EJ Kloosterboer at his farm in Laren, Holland. We had to wait a long time to see a new release by the No-Goods and we were not 100% happy with all the stuff we recorded with EJ, but yeah, this sounds good. My personal fave is the song "Wonder", b-side "Maureen" is a bit boring to me, 'cause I played it too much with no enthousiasm anymore. Some songs you can play forever, some songs you play + - 15 times and then preferably never again. I noticed both good reactions on "Maureen" as very low critics on this song. So, I think I made clear now that I go for side one. "Wonder" I wrote a long time ago and I'm very glad this song was chosen by the guys from Kuriosa to be on the single. By the way, you can hear the song, together with other stuff on our Myspace page www.myspace.com/lekkerebeat. You can also hear some new recordings there, wich will appear on our upcoming first longplayer, on Minstrel Records from Zwolle. But that one will be out somewhere in october this year. Ok, so far for now, greetz from Meppel.Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-63374283195104324302010-02-24T21:06:00.012+01:002010-02-25T20:37:40.960+01:00While taking out the trash....While taking out the trash, a few copies were found of some old CITY TRASH, the magazine for wild & raw rockin´ primitive teens!!
CITY TRASH #4
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH0fPlXb4PVYBE0_8eszEfDNl5UUhsf8h0nTriOFAGRUEF0BBFqJM3WrDB0hZa4eg0GOme-05S3NDecieTZf_lzqn3lCLNMbBM9RG3uNru_SOSshBSYYzYdX3aP4b_P8nD6VZDUKNn0sOE/s320/CT%234.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442263102037263602" />
CITY TRASH #5
w. Well of course you should go and record them, and that´s just what Henri Keefmen did. Using here the less pretentious monnicker of Henri Soulmann. The result is 11 songs, that pretty much show his songwriting skills and the music he likes, like sixties, soul and rock´n´roll.
For those who are familiar with the classic solo recording of Mark ten Hoor "Back to the Wenaker", this is done in similar vein. Peter Cruise (As he now seems to be called) again has out done himself in "orchestrating" the great songs, adding an organ, a bit of fuzz or some basslines. Listen for instance to the fuzz driven "Butterflies", perhaps this is freakbeat??? I have no idea. Or the moody "I truly cry" and "About our love" with a fine organ arrangement and the fanatastic and probably my favorite "Have you seen her".
Fortunately it´s not done all over the top, there are some more acoustic tunes here as well, like the intense "Don´t aks me", the sad "Freezing on a Summerday", the uptempo shouter "All your love", and the catchy "Be that guy", the last two were actually recorded by Henri himself. As expected there´s some place for straight ahead rock´n´roll, and Henri sure loves his Johnny Cash records as is quite evident in the Johnny Cash styled rocker "Doin´ time". And also Hasil Adkins springs to mind hearing "Oeh Ie Ah Oehhh!" Perhaps only not as insane. As a nice surprise he included a version of soul classic "I never loved a woman (the way I loved you) penned by Ronnie Shannon, recorded by many like Jackie Wilson and Aretha Franklin and now Henri Soulmann. His version: it´s crude, raw, wild and great!!!
Be sure to drop by Henri Soulmann´s myspace, and get yourselve a copy. It will be definetely worth the effort.Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-75519024710266627842010-02-07T13:31:00.012+01:002010-02-08T21:44:36.271+01:00For your listening pleasure.....Recently a fine collection of nederbeat could be heard on Radio Extremadura featuring biet classics from De Clungels, Mokum Beat Five and De Clichee Mannetjes (Van Kooten en de Bie). And of course also our local heroes of The No-Goods, The Miracle Men and De Keefmen were played on the great Fonorama radioshow, a show you actually should always check for some great beat, garagepunk, punk, soul and sixties pop, wouldn´t it be great if there was something like this on Dutch Radio!
Radio Fonorama playlist 23 january
Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-81845738758811969852010-01-27T20:26:00.006+01:002010-01-27T20:41:06.082+01:00The No-Goods in Zwolle 30 JanuaryThis saturday the No-Goods will play with The Norvins from France in Eureka. The Norvins released a fine album on the excellent Soundflat Records filled with garage and beat and the essential organ. The No-Goods have promised to perform better than last time in Utrecht (but who puts them in the non-smokin´ section anyway) and give a nice taster of the upcoming LP on Minstrel Records, that hopefully will see the light of day soon, because we could use some Lekkere Beat at home. De heren staan garant voor een avondje swingen in de sfeer van de door hen bewonderde rauwe 60’s garage en beat bands. As you could have read, De Keefmen have been in a museum before, but this time it´s different. The 10 inch released on Kuriosa Records in the spring of this year is part of someone´s collection of special sleeves, and they are on exhibition at the Grafisch Museum Groningen. So if you are in the area be sure to visit it. If you´re smart and you always wanted a musuem piece here´s your chance, contact De Keefmen or Kuriosa Records I´ll bet there are still some copies left of that wonderful 10".

They just released a killer debut 10inch on the
legendary KURIOSA RECORDS and during the trip they would
present their new 45 “Crying at my door/ What´s happening”
out on the Spanish label VINYL JUNKIE REKKIDS from
Zaragoza run by the sympathetic Koko.
The 3 days would take us from Madrid, the center of Spain, to
Zaragoza in the north, and would end in the south near
Alicante in the pueblo Orihuela. The tour was mostly put together
by Raul from the FUMESTONES and HEY GIRL RECORDS, and
he had done a good job arranging todo, but as always De
Keefmen arrived a day earlier on a hot summer day wearing their
leather jackets and jerseys, to enjoy a little bit of Spain and
Madrid. It would not be the last time they would be sweating.
D: It was nice to spent some time in Madrid, because we knew
that the rest of the tour was going to be driving and playing only.
Peter and I even went to the Prado to see El Bosco’s Garden of
Earthly Delights.
P: Yeah that was great to it see for real. We also saw the
Colossos by Goya and some great work from Ruben's. Too bad
this was the only day we could do things like this.
D: More earthly delights we saw and experienced on the streets
and in de bars of Madrid... What a delighting experience! Madrid’s
atmosphere reminded me a lot of Amsterdam... and not only
because of the prostitutes with tattoos on their tits and the
gay-area we stayed in (Peter still has nightmares of the big
golden cock he saw on the door of one of the clubs). Madrid is
very relaxed and the Madrilènes are very relaxed as well. Two
beers on an empty stomach in the full sun makes your pace fit in
really well.
H: First off all Alfred and I discovered the Metro! This comes in
handy; we need one of those in Drenthe. Anyway: we got out in
Callao, this was the place to be to visit some real good record
stores Raul told me. After we’ve seen only one somehow we end
up having coffee and the best piece of chocolate cake I’ve ever
had with a hooker sitting next to Alfred right in front of me!! I could
have a look all the way to California. This definitely was the best
coffee I had!

Than it was already time to get back on the metro and go to
Nuevos Ministerios where we’d meet up with Raul again to rent a
car for the next few days when we’d actually get on tour. After
some Spanish I don’t speak we went for this real nice café to have
lunch in Spanish tradition. Raul ordered the best fried potatoes
ever, some nice meatball kinda stuff, bread, cheese and a
delicious octopus! Wow, and off course it all came along with
some more beers. Than Raul got back to work. The rest off the
day we spent together drinking some more in the sun nearby Gran
Via with a nice view on supply and demand according to the
oldest job in the world. Too much horrifying supply after my
opinion….
After all this tourism it was time to do what they came here to do.
First on the agenda was the Pequena Bety, of course the best
place in Madrid.
D: What a beautiful place there’s no such thing in The Netherlands
a single club devoted to sixties/garage music. They even had
rock’n’roll food and beautiful little Betties serving drinks.
P: A really nice place to hang out, cool retro design too.
H: I can only agree with that! The place looked brilliant!!! Nice
sixties/seventies style bar and tables! Great rock’n roll posters all
over the place. It all suited each other very well!! And the diner:
on the first night I had the best and biggest burger I ever had! A
Big Mac becomes a Small Mac compared to that!! It was delicious.
P: The stage was down in the cellar, wich reminded a bit of Vera's
downstage, but slightly bigger. When the first band started, the
place filled up and when we started the crowd went wild and so
did we. Little Betty is great!
Opening for them were TV EXPLOSION, a group a little bit more
punkrock than De Keefmen, and with great enthousiasm they prepared
the people for what was coming. And when finally De
Keefmen hit the stage I was not even fully ready. Skipping the
more moody and ballad stuff, they came at you like a tornado, fast
paced and surprisingly furious. Now I´ve seen them many times,
but this was an intense set, a pure shot of adreneline, playing
their hits like “Told you once, told you twice” and “ Till the end of
time” and adding next to the Troggs cover “6654321” the Love
song “My flash on you”, done a bit scruffy, but at the same time
perfectly. The crowd went wild and I was perplexed.
Soaking in sweat it became a long night for De Keefmen.

P: I went outside for fresh air, but got hold up by some crazy
Spaniards who wanted autographs and take pictures with me, that
was really strange, but cool aswell.
H: The owner of the club paid me the money and bought our
record. ‘Next time you come and play here the crowd will be four
times as big, what a wild, wild show!!’
And there was this strange old man who wanted me too speak
Spanish with him. So I drank some more and tried but I still
couldn’t speak Spanish. On one point I had the idea that probably
he wanted to make sweet love to me. That’s when I avoided him
and send him to Peter.
D: After the show we went to the Louie Louie rock’n’roll bar. And
then…?
P: And then everybody got more drunk then they already were. It
was fun!
H: Aaaaah yes: The Louie Louie! Almost forgot about this place!
Indescribable beauty! You could tell from the walls that it
contained the right history. We went there with some nice people
who attended our show at the La Pequena Bety. The DJ even
played the Outsiders I remember! I ended up convincing one of
‘em to see our show the next day (at that moment that day) in
Zaragoza, after ten minutes I discovered he didn’t speak English.
That was absolutely the time to get to bed.
Next day it was it was time to do the first travelling and find out if
Touren with Alfred Nooy is as much fun as the song claims. Our
Dean Moriarty from Ruinen would be driving us the whole tour, a
total off over 1500km in 3 days. He succeeded in convincing us
the song speaks the truth. What the song didn´t tell he would be
wearing shorts all the time.
P: Alfredo is the man. Even in the overcrowded streets of Madrid
he remained calm and found ways to make crazy statements. We
listened to lotsa ole country rock to keep him satisfied.
D: Alfred ‘een beetje flexibiliteit siert de mens’ Nooij was a hell of a
driver... Always in a good mood, always hungry, and always ready
to annoy somebody with his rhetorical remarks... But very good
company! Thanks dude!
H: Touren met Alfred ‘wat is dat hier joh met die Cappucino’s en
café solo’s? Ik wil gewoon een normale koffie! Is dat teveel
gevraagd?’ Nooij was a very decent driver with no ‘fratsen’ that
‘scheelt’. He had the right pace to get us in time for every gig. I
remembered that he liked Zaragoza very much: ‘mooie
palmboombies enzo, ja, dat vink wel mooi’. He was awesome:
glad he came along and took care of us!
Upon arrival in Zaragoza after a 5 hour drive, because our driver
needed to eat in some place along the highway, we were greeted
on the streets by a nerves man wearing a Pierced Arrows shirt. He
turned out to be Koko, the man behind VINYL JUNKIE REKKIDS.

H: He was unbelievable, what a good man! He paid everything for
us. He was too kind. In the beginning he worked a little on my
nerve by text messaging me every ten minutes where we were
(we were much too late…). But in the end I understand: we came
in quarter past nine. Did the soundcheck, went to eat (mostly
drinking) something and than the owner of the club ordered us to
start playing (that was ten a clock, now I understand the hurry). So
I barely ate anything yet and I find myself back on stage again
drinkin’. Doesn’t matter, that’s being on the road I guess. Damn
what a night it was! Ending the show on the ground, soloing
through Cryin’ At My Door for the second time ‘cause of the single
presentation, people filling me up with beer and than some more
beer. Later on we went to another club which I can’t remember. It
was too ‘gezellig’. I paid for that the next morning.
D: Koko was amazing... I think it was the first show he organized,
because when we arrived at the club, and hour and a half too late,
he was out on the streets looking for us... Before the show he took
us out to dinner, where I had the best vegetarian food in Spain
ever. Koko took good care of us.
P: Koko is the man, he made sure we came nothing short and also
took care of our friends, who came along.
Through the simple use of myspace De Keefmen had ended up on
his label, “just sent me some songs Im sure I´ll like them” is what
he had told them. and now they were in Zaragoza, playing the
KEZKA bar, a small bar reminiscent of their local hang out in
Meppel, but then with some good rocknroll music.
P: It seemed more like a 50's rock&roll bar, but it was the perfect
place for us.
D: For a second I thought we were at the headquarters of the local
Elvis fanclub… It was a small bar, with a small stage in the corner,
lots of fifties looking people and girls talking about Genk Wieljems.
P: The show was wild again and the Zaragozians know how to
make a fun party.
H: It looked more rockabilly-like or something. But that didn’t keep
the crowd from going all the way during our show. In the end I
liked this show the best, damn it was so fucking special,
presenting your 7" too a bunch of insane wild Spaniards and of
course meeting up with Koko who I’d been contacting for over a
year through mail, he looked so good wearing that big orange
Keefmen t-shirt.
An early concert doesn´t mean an early night. While I was
improving my Spanish, after the weekend I had a sore throat of
speaking it, and selling a lot of records I could witness De
Keefmen drinking and talking and to no ones surprise we ended
up in a local disco. Fortunately Koko had arranged a perfect hotel
for De Keefmen were everybody could sleep it off, or at least that´s
what I thought.
D: I didn’t feel too good, but Henri looked like shit. Koko was
waiting for us downstairs in the lobby, but we only discovered him
later. He apologized for his English, told us to wait a second,
ordered a beer and two greasy sausages and all of a sudden his
English approved again. According to Koko, Henri was knocked
out!
H: No comments. I only wanna say thanks to Peter for buying
some life saving banana’s.
There was not much time to visit anything in Zaragoza, because
we needed to go to Orihuela. We did manage to see a church,
apparently an important one, but I was already thinking of the trip.
P: It was quite a long ride, but it went pretty quick thanks to Alfred
who knows how to keep his feet on the gas.
H: It was about 7 and a half hours on the road. Alfred mentioned
that you could get ‘rare ongelukken’. But why I can’t remember.
Near Valencia he wanted to stop the car to get a pair of nice juicy
melons straight from the tree’. We initially planned to drive through
Benidorm and go for a dive in the sea. But there was no time left
for some gay swimming.
Somehow we found the place to play, La Gramola in Orihuela
near Alicante. Quite a legendary place, with a lot of groups
playing there. it might be the Pits from Spain, but a lot bigger, but
in a small place. I have no idea how big Orihuela is but it might
be like Meppel or even smaller.
P: We entered the city and saw the club from the outside and
thought 'where the hell did we end up this time?!', but once we got
inside it made more sense, cool rock&roll club and the stage
looked great, so everybody was in the right mood again.
D: La Gramola was a nice club, with annoying customers! Some
dude tried to pick a fight with me because I didn’t want to take a
picture with his wife. The club was in some backstreet, with lots of
cats and catshit everywhere… The owner was a nice dude, who
only spoke Spanish… with a nice kid who could play soccer and
‘Thunderstruck’ at the same time. For some reason most people
came in only after the show.
P: Still there were enough people to get a wild party going.
Although on the pictures I saw, we look damn beat and
sweat-sooked haha.
H: It was great, even the customers. And of course Jesus and
Vero of Los Fusibles we’re great! Good people to hang out with.
We sold and signed many records and I even put my autograph
on a girl itself. What’s that about?
We stayed the night in some cabin in Bigastro a pueblo close to
Orihuela. This cabin was a bit difficult to find and my guess is we
got to see the whole town, before we got there, but that was not
all we saw
D: When we were driving in the car, looking for the campsite,
where we were supposed to stay in this wooden cabin, all of a
sudden some kind of procession was moving towards us from
over the hill. Alfred was looking to put the car in reverse and
everybody was freaking out! What a hell of a day!
P: It felt like a scene from a bad horror flick with hundreds of
people heading for us.

When De Keefmen arrived back at the venue to do the soundcheck
we were welcomed by Los Fusibles, well two of them.
They would do a short furious set in Low Point Drains vain, which
was a pleasant surprise.
D: In Orihuela we played with half of Los Fusibles, Jessus and
Veroína, who’s equipment we borrowed. Veronica has a nice set
of bongos. Vintage Gretch and all that jazz… They played about
15 minutes of their primitive, but pounding garage rock. Not bad
at all!
P: Great people too, they took us out for dinner that night.
Yes food very important to the Spanish, but also to De Keefmen.
P: It was good everywhere, no junk food but tasty tapas, spicy
potatoes, good red wine and beers and offcourse some schnapps
afterwards to get us in the right mood for the show! It's difficult to
explain you're vegeterian though.
D: The food was delicious. On the night of the show in Madrid,
Raul from The Fumestones took us out to a more traditional tapas
place, where local Spaniards would also eat. It was one big
bacchanal of tapas, beers and booze. There were way too many
people in the restaurant, a bunch of them belonging to the TV
Explosion, the opening band of the night. There was lots of
smoking and lots of screaming going on. It was amazing. And
before we got a chance to empty our glasses Raul made sure the
waiter put some more beers on the table. This is where our
Spanish deliriums began…

H: Oh yeah, it was very good that night!!! Very nice Spanish
peppers I remember and I had this delightful fish with potatoes.
Raul did absolutely know how to promote Spain.
And the show in Orihuela you wonder? Well just like Zaragoza
and Madrid De Keefmen took the stage and impressed. Perhaps
it was just their size, but I think it was the energetic wild & raw
performance that convinced the crowd. “Crying at my door”, “Be a
Keefmen”, “The mystery tree” and “Don´t look back” all seem to
be perfect wild savage party tunes which people didn´t seem to
get enough off.
A tour, a bit like an holiday, 3 days of playing and partying, just
what De Keefmen needed and for that matter I needed. Any
complaints?
P: More free beers would be nice next time, that would safe us
some money aswell.
Are they coming back?
P: I definitely want to go back to Spain and do a slightly longer
tour, we had such a good time!
I guess they will. A week later you could still sense the adreneline
rushing through your veins thinking about the gigs. Unfortunately
they had to miss the reunion with Raul when the Fumestones
took the stage in Rotterdam, which is a big shame. Hopefully
they can make it up next time in Rotterdam at the Primitive Fest.
And after that it´s time these Keefmen work on some new
songs and get a full lenght LP out there.
P: And offcourse we'll be doing more sweaty live shows and
tours.
I´m counting on it!
In the meantime you go out there and get their great 45 “Crying at
my door” on Vinyl Junkie Rekkids and their debut 10inch on
Kuriosa, you won´t be dissapointed!

Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-43872619693369610822009-11-15T10:44:00.005+01:002009-11-16T17:46:50.477+01:00Touring with Alfredo Nooij

Obviously we had some questions for the driver
of this short trip across the whole of Spain,
a man who already has a song named after him,
Alfred Nooy.
How was touring with De Keefmen in Spain?
Well touring with De Keefmen was a great
experience that only lasted 5 days. Every night
De Keefmen played a show. the bar or club was
rocking, the people in Spain like De Keefmen.
And I have to say the people in Spain I met
were very gentle and hospitable, like Raul and
his wife for offering us a sleeping place, and
Koko the record-label boss for arranging the
concert in Zaragoza. Next time De Keefmen
should tour Spain at least 10 to 14 days.
How is driving in Spain?
Spain is a very beautiful and big country, we
drove from Madrid to Zaragoza (heading to the
North East) and then to Orihuela (Southwards
near Alicante) and back to Madrid again.
We saw different kinds of landscapes, so from a
geographical point of view I found driving
through Spain very interesting. What also
amazed me was that, contrary to the
Netherlands, in Spain there isn't much traffic
(not counting Madrid). That was very relaxed.
And the food? Hamburgers or something
different?
If you like food, like me, Spain is a very good
choice to spent your time or to emigrate to.
They eat four or five times during one day.
In holland you eat three times a day. This
means that I ate 67 percent more there. In
Madrid I ate a hamburger half the size of a cow.
I'm wondering what kind of hamburgers they
have in Hamburg?
Favorite song for on the road?
Great music while driving I think is music with a
country flavour. So let's say Travellin Band a
song from Creedence Clearwater Revival.
But also the song "land beyond the moon" from
the motions is for me a typical road song.
Favorite Keefmen song?
I'm thinking of two songs. Told you once, told
you twice and Sweet Doreen. The first song is
more rocking and fucked up than the second
one which is more a ballad.

Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8424956559027194830.post-5734209854110868282009-11-15T10:35:00.006+01:002009-11-16T17:46:21.393+01:00New Single Grapefruit Zoo

Out of Drenthe come THE GRAPEFRUIT ZOO,
fronted by De Keefmen´s bassplayer, Peter.
This time on vocals and guitar. And the good
news!! Their debut 45 is out now on Grey Past
Records. A-side is a crude & raw cover of
Heatwave´s Said before, it couldn´thappen to
me. B-side is a song written by Mark Ten Hoor
of No-Goods fame, the neo freakbeat stomper
Missing Someone. A short introduction:
Who are the Grapefruit Zoo?
Peter - guitar & vocals
Vincent - bass & vocals
Ruben - drums
What´s happening?
Our 45 should be out by the time you're reading
this and then we'll be playing in Breda to
celebrate this together with the Heatwave. After
that it's time to record our new songs, at the
Tapeworm Studios ofcourse.
What can we expect?
I have no idea, we are very easy and laidback,
but have a lot of fun playing together. So no big
plans except another record.
Favorite animal? Pussy
Favorite food? Italian
Favorite drink? Red wine
Colour Hair? Red
Colour Eyes? Bloodshot

It took a lot of time to get it released
thanks to some recording difficulties and finding
a pressing plant that was reliable. Finally
everything was ready and everybody now can
enjoy their great song “Wonder” on a piece of
vinyl. We asked Mark some questions on what´s
going on.

Enjoying your new single?
We're very glad with our new 7", it looks and
sounds very good in our opinion. It's nice to see
that an old song (I wrote "Wonder" years ago) is
now on vinyl and in our setlist. Eventhough these
are a bit older recordings, it sounds fresh & catchy.
What´s happening?
We just finished the recordings for an upcoming
lp! Our first album on 12" vinyl, wich will be
rerleased by a recordstore/label from Zwolle,
the Netherlands, Minstrel Music. And ofcourse
we want to do a lot of live gigs in the (near)
future, especially when this lp has been released,
to promote it. We also have a new organ/guitarplayer,
Jan and it's very cool making music with him and do
live shows.
What can we expect?
As I said we have a new organ/guitar-man in the
band and on our latest recordings you can hear
an a bit heavier sound then our past releases
and recordings. A lot of songs were done with
two guitars and also some backing vocals by
Peter (bassplayer) and Jan. We hope Minstrel
Music is gonna release our lp soon, but we have
to change some details in the recordings,
sometimes the organ is too loud in the mix or the
backing vocals can have a bit lower volume. But
I think this year there will be a No-Goods lp. So
great.
check www.myspace.com/lekkerebeat for the
latest on these boys.

Drenthe Beat Pageshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07781318963815606645noreply@blogger.com0
